75th Anniversary – Pearl Harbor

Yesterday, I attended the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra’s “Pearl Harbor 75th Commemoration Concert” at Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Uncharacteristically, I came prepared with my sketchbook (but ended up drawing on the program) and 3 pens (a felt-tip Sharpie, ballpoint, and rollerball). Although my vantage point was perfect––a sweeping view of the crowd and orchestra from the balcony, the lighting was not as great. Sketching the bright stage scene in near total darkness was a challenge. I soon opted for a loose, less-detailed approach.

A wonderful evening of music and education (provided by host Howard Dicus) with families and service members in attendance.

that’s great sebastian. good feeling of being there. somehow the translation of a scene into a sketch has an entirely different impact than a photo. ivan

What a good reminder of using any opportunity for sketching subjects. We raced over to the concert after leaving the parade and didn’t think to capture the serenity of the concert hall. Your sketches prove that it’s always possible, thanks, Sebastian, good work.
