Hawaiian Steel Guitar and Blues

Sketchers at today’s event in the State Library enjoyed a triple treat: outstanding live music, local history shared by expert musicians, and a backdrop of a gazillion books –– not that any of us found time to read. In fact, the wonderful performance by the Bobby Ingano Trio made it hard to even remember that we meant to be creative ourselves! Sharing our work was also a highlight, particularly in the lovely setting of the library’s inner courtyard and with several new artists joining us today.

As always, don’t forget to check out our sketches on Flickr and upload your own!

Sketching at ‘Iolani Palace

‘Iolani Palace is a popular subject for sketchers, but rarely do we get to venture inside with pencil and paper. Today’s opportunity to do so, thanks to the support and hospitality of the Friends of ‘Iolani Palace, was thus greatly appreciated, as was the fascinating tour by docent educator Zita Cup Choy. With exterior views being just as tempting on a beautiful day, time was too short for most of us to cover even a fraction of the many irresistible sights. Yet again, the verdict is: we will be back!

Join us on November 26th at Hawai‘i State Public Library for the next event.

Hope to see you there!

Basketball at the Stan Sheriff Center

Got to see the Arizona Wildcats play the Michigan State Spartans for the Armed Forces Classic this afternoon. What an exciting game! I mostly sketched during halftime or whenever a timeout was called… otherwise I was cheering. You might be able to tell who I was rooting for. :)

Hope to see you at the next event on Sunday morning!

I Voted!

Sketched my polling station this afternoon. I still find it exciting to go to the booth to cast my vote.

Celebrating Arbor Day!

I got up early for the tree giveaway at McKinley High School this morning. They passed out a few brochures (one with a bonus salad recipe on the back) and also a cute quiz to complete while I waited in line. That meant I had a pencil and paper in hand… so… what did you expect? :D

Halloween!

Although I did not participate in the tricking or the treating, I did enjoy sketching the various monsters that passed me. I had to be quick. These sketches took me anywhere from 10 seconds to 2 minutes, so I had no time to groan about proportions. And it also meant I ended up sketching more parents than kids –– they move a bit slower :). Hope everyone had a fun Halloween!

Kawaiaha‘o Church

It was a day full of pleasant surprises. The heavy clouds of the morning gave way to a partly overcast afternoon; the two weddings scheduled for today at Kawaiaha‘o Church wrapped themselves perfectly around our event; and the simplicity and timeless architecture of the church (inside and out) was admired by all. A great day to sketch – photos below.
