At Whole Foods on a Rainy Day
Posted: January 12, 2020 Filed under: USkO | Tags: grocery store, Whole Foods 1 CommentWe finally made it back to Whole Foods! The location was perfect for us on this rainy day: sweeping views of a large grocery store and surrounding urban life, ample parking, and food to recover after a long sketch. At show-and-tell, we talked about vanishing points, digital art tips and tech, ambidextrous sketching, capturing the wet and splashy outdoors, and drawing people (always tricky – Terri is charging ahead, learning from instructional videos during bus commutes!). Also, Joel stunned us with a discreet oil painting setup outfitted with jars, a pallet knife, and a glass tray for mixing. It sounds like he’s in the market for a small, robust easel too. We are looking forward to seeing how the setup develops!
And, as mentioned this morning, Harald thanks everyone for the well wishes and looks forward to joining in on the fun next time!
Happy new year everyone!

It’s a Wrap!

Under cavernous ceilings, the 72,000-sqft store offered many sketch-worthy sights: stacks of cheese wheels, piles of fresh fruit, pyramids of hot sauces, and almost aerial views of the newly built-up neighborhood from the second-floor windows. We regretted that the parking garage was too far from our sketch location – its impressive “this stall is available” technology would have merited documentation. Show-and-Tell at our outdoor venue yet again brought together a diversity of scenes and styles. And was followed by lunch and coffee for some of us.

A Weatherproof, Windward Morning
Posted: December 2, 2017 Filed under: USkO | Tags: Kailua, Whole Foods Leave a commentOur second event at Whole Foods, Kailua, again took advantage of the many options on offer at and around the store: sheltered sketching opportunities in- and outdoors, urban scenes, people, all kinds of merchandise, and holiday decoration for good measure. Since the weather cooperated, some adventurous sketchers also sampled views from the more extended neighborhood. Strengthened by cookies provided by Nancy, we shared artwork and observations before solemnly swearing to make sure not to miss our next, extraordinary, end-of-year event on December 16th at the historical Washington Place Mansion.

And 2017 Kicks Off!
Posted: January 6, 2017 Filed under: USkO | Tags: Kahala Mall, Whole Foods 8 CommentsWe held our first event of 2017 at Whole Foods in Kahala Mall, where we were surrounded by a buffet of colors, smells, and textures. Shout-out to Vishan and Scot from WF for their enthusiastic response and warm welcome!
Show-and-tell was again our favorite part of the evening. Michele joined us for one last event before returning to Seattle, leaving us with an addiction to a new pen that at least three of us are now using. We hope to see her again next winter! Alice showed us her sketches of people, as she expands her series of the animal kingdom (normally confined to the Honolulu Zoo). Newcomer Lauren showed no rust after returning to sketching after a 4-year hiatus, and Ivan dazzled us with a personal record of five sketches in 1.5 hours! Finally, we were also joined by our youngest sketcher yet––can you spot her in our photos? :)

A Wholesome Get-together
Posted: June 30, 2016 Filed under: USkO | Tags: Kailua, Whole Foods 2 CommentsYesterday evening we descended upon Kailua’s Whole Foods Market. The purpose of our visit was in danger of taking a backseat to admiring and sampling the tasty and beautifully arranged food – but, once fed, we managed to focus on the task at hand. As usual there was no shortage of worthy sketch subjects. Time passed quickly, and the setting sun added challenges to those of us sketching outside.
At show-and-tell we lined a bench with our sketches and chatted about what drew us to the scenes and media we had chosen. Ivan treated us to a digital sketch of the bar area that combined computer emulations of pen and watercolor, and newcomer Eric brought a new (real life) medium into the mix: acrylic paint pens.
Since this was another, rare midweek event (evening too), we would appreciate feedback on how these work for everyone. Feel free to leave a comment or send us email. And, as always, don’t forget to check out the day’s sketches on Flickr – and upload yours!
Our next event will be on July 9 at Koko Head Botanical Garden. Stay tuned for details!
