And 2017 Kicks Off!

We held our first event of 2017 at Whole Foods in Kahala Mall, where we were surrounded by a buffet of colors, smells, and textures. Shout-out to Vishan and Scot from WF for their enthusiastic response and warm welcome!

Show-and-tell was again our favorite part of the evening. Michele joined us for one last event before returning to Seattle, leaving us with an addiction to a new pen that at least three of us are now using. We hope to see her again next winter! Alice showed us her sketches of people, as she expands her series of the animal kingdom (normally confined to the Honolulu Zoo). Newcomer Lauren showed no rust after returning to sketching after a 4-year hiatus, and Ivan dazzled us with a personal record of five sketches in 1.5 hours! Finally, we were also joined by our youngest sketcher yet––can you spot her in our photos? :)

As always, don’t forget to check out our sketches on Flickr and upload your own!

See you at our next event on January 28 for Chinese New Year!

Happy New Year, Sketchers!

First Event of 2017!

A Growing USkO Network

Last week, Urban Sketchers Correspondent and Washingtonian Michele contacted us about sketching with the O‘ahu chapter. Since no official events were planned during our brief recess for the holidays, we decided to get together for an impromptu sketch in Chinatown. Kekaulike Street is overflowing with sketch subjects: produce stands, shoppers, delivery trucks, rainbow umbrellas, family-owned shops, big markets, and curious passersby. As so often before, time ran out way too soon. We did get an exciting glimpse of Michele’s travel and sketching activities though, sampling her work from visits to Edinburgh, the Manchester USk Symposium, and of course Hawai‘i.

Check out our sketches on Flickr!

Looking forward to seeing Michele again at our first event in the new year (stay tuned)!

75th Anniversary – Pearl Harbor

Yesterday, I attended the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra’s “Pearl Harbor 75th Commemoration Concert” at Blaisdell Concert Hall.

Uncharacteristically, I came prepared with my sketchbook (but ended up drawing on the program) and 3 pens (a felt-tip Sharpie, ballpoint, and rollerball). Although my vantage point was perfect––a sweeping view of the crowd and orchestra from the balcony, the lighting was not as great. Sketching the bright stage scene in near total darkness was a challenge. I soon opted for a loose, less-detailed approach.

A wonderful evening of music and education (provided by host Howard Dicus) with families and service members in attendance.

A Shaka from Santa

The last event of the year tested our ability to focus amidst so much action! Not to mention the danger of getting lost in the crowd.

We wish all sketchers a happy holiday season and new year! Stay tuned for 2017 activities!
