Blog Correspondency

Hello sketchers!

We want to draw your attention to an opportunity for USkO sketchers to become more involved with the Urban Sketchers family on both a local and international scale. Starting in the first quarter of 2016, we will be sending sketchers invitations to become USkO blog correspondents. As a correspondent, you will be able to publish posts on the USkO blog and help raise the visibility of the chapter. Note that we will select invitees primarily based on their participation in our events and on Flickr – see https://uskoahu.wordpress.com/participation/ for more details.

We are excited to be entering the next phase in the evolution and expansion of our chapter!

Sketching a Harpist at the Library

Librarian and harpist Sally Walstrum performed at the Hawai‘i State Library yesterday afternoon. She had selected pieces from a variety of genres (some involving audience participation), showcasing the versatility of her instruments which included both a concert pedal and electric harp. Sketchers in attendance, including several newcomers, had a rare opportunity to engage in figure drawing of (almost) stationary “models” – some of them fellow members of the audience. We hope to develop closer ties with the library for future events – which may involve exhibiting our sketches.

Art on Tantalus

After a week of rather wet weather, Sunday brought blue skies and sunshine to Tantalus; perfect conditions for today’s event at the Honolulu Museum of Art Spalding House. The grounds are a delight, offering a plethora of angles for sketches of the museum building, outdoor art installations, or simply the gorgeous views. We had the pleasure of meeting Lauren, artist in residence, who was tending to her “living” installation (it contains moss!) which will be on display for one more week. Returning sketchers as well as new arrivals took up position on a few of the many shady spots on the lawn, and the resulting artwork demonstrated yet again a wonderful diversity of subjects and styles.
