Sketch Event at Punahou Carnival

Hope to see you tomorrow evening!

Sketch Event on UH Mānoa Campus

The new year is off to a great start with a well attended event at UH Mānoa’s Campus Center. Among the many newcomers was Kev from snowy Ohio who impressed us with a tiny sketch set — homemade, no less.

We found campus to be very accommodating, providing moving and stationary subjects, a variety of architectural styles (such as the monumental crossbeams of the Art Department, or the recently completed Warrior Recreation Center), and infrastructure that offers a plethora of shaded seating opportunities and second-floor vantage points.

Why didn’t we come here before?!

Hope to see everyone at Punahou Carnival next month!

Looking forward to an exciting year of sketch events!

Honolulu Marathon

Although I could not make myself get up early enough to see the lead runners from Kenya finish, I did sketch the crowded atmosphere of the Kapi‘olani Park finish line at 10:00 a.m. Below are runners’ families and friends cheering them through the final stretch, and finishers heading to the massage tables, snack tents, and photo booths… or making the daring decision to lie down and take a nap.

Mānoa Valley Christmas Parade

Earlier this month, I went to see the Christmas parade with, seemingly, every Mānoa Valley resident. I took up position on the corner of Lowrey Ave. and East Manoa Rd., and saw entire streets lined with people in a festive, community spirit. Unfortunately, the parade passed by so quickly that I was only able to capture a few moments: a police motorcycle leading the parade, a school’s marching band performing Christmas carols, and a troop of Scottish bagpipe players.

What Crawleth Out at Night

Yesterday’s sketch crawl during First Friday in the Chinatown district of downtown Honolulu witnessed a celebration of the arts and everything quirky. As we sketched into the evening, we were entertained by glass art at The ARTS at Marks Garage (including live glass blowing and shaping on the street corner), a performance by The Gay Men’s Chorus, people dressed up in Christmas costumes, a group having dinner with an alien puppet, drummers, and event-goers passing by. There was even a sighting of Santa! Not that we were fast enough to capture much of it in our sketches …

John and the team from Marks kindly provided a space for our show-and-tell session at the end of the evening. With a long table, great lighting, and plenty of seating, the venue did not lack for anything and caused quite a number of gallery visitors to stop by and flip through our sketchbooks. One admirer was even treated to an autographed sketch by Ruth Ann.
