A Red-Hot Afternoon at GAAH

At the invitation of Glass Arts Association of Hawai‘i (GAAH), Urban Sketchers O‘ahu attended the glass artists’ Saturday open house. In a welcoming setting with pupus and live music, sketchers captured live glass shaping and blowing while keeping a safe distance from the blazing furnaces and red-hot globs of glass. GAAH founder Ted Clark and fellow staff demonstrated the creation of friggers and helped visitors make their first pieces of glass art. Just like sketchers, glass artists have to work fast – not because their subjects move but because they solidify!

It was a fascinating introduction to a 3D art form that many of us had not had first-hand experience with, and we certainly plan to be back.

Blog Correspondency

Hello sketchers!

We want to draw your attention to an opportunity for USkO sketchers to become more involved with the Urban Sketchers family on both a local and international scale. Starting in the first quarter of 2016, we will be sending sketchers invitations to become USkO blog correspondents. As a correspondent, you will be able to publish posts on the USkO blog and help raise the visibility of the chapter. Note that we will select invitees primarily based on their participation in our events and on Flickr – see https://uskoahu.wordpress.com/participation/ for more details.

We are excited to be entering the next phase in the evolution and expansion of our chapter!

Aloha,

USkO Admins

Sketching a Harpist at the Library

Librarian and harpist Sally Walstrum performed at the Hawai‘i State Library yesterday afternoon. She had selected pieces from a variety of genres (some involving audience participation), showcasing the versatility of her instruments which included both a concert pedal and electric harp. Sketchers in attendance, including several newcomers, had a rare opportunity to engage in figure drawing of (almost) stationary “models” – some of them fellow members of the audience. We hope to develop closer ties with the library for future events – which may involve exhibiting our sketches.

Below are photos of Sally’s exciting performance and of our subsequent show-and-tell session.

Have you ever sketched a harpist?

Art on Tantalus

After a week of rather wet weather, Sunday brought blue skies and sunshine to Tantalus; perfect conditions for today’s event at the Honolulu Museum of Art Spalding House. The grounds are a delight, offering a plethora of angles for sketches of the museum building, outdoor art installations, or simply the gorgeous views. We had the pleasure of meeting Lauren, artist in residence, who was tending to her “living” installation (it contains moss!) which will be on display for one more week. Returning sketchers as well as new arrivals took up position on a few of the many shady spots on the lawn, and the resulting artwork demonstrated yet again a wonderful diversity of subjects and styles.

Below are photos of our show-and-tell session and of sketchers in action. Join the fun on November 21 when we attend and sketch a harp performance inside the Hawai‘i State Library!

Soaked, Slapped, and Sanded

No, really, the weather was fine at Kaimana Beach this morning. Just a little gusty at times. And the occasional drizzle. All attendants had a lot of fun though, and there was no shortage of targets for our artistic ambitions. The lifeguard tower proved irresistible, the Natatorium challenging (Anita was up to it though), and postures and activities on and off the beach plentiful. Below is our traditional collection of scenes and views from the event.

Spalding House next weekend will provide a very different setting – see you all there! (Yes, that means you!)

A Visit with San Diego Urban Sketchers

The aspect that I enjoy most about the Urban Sketchers (USk) organization is its worldwide network of artists. When I traveled to San Diego recently I was fortunate to go at a time when the local group had scheduled a weekend event. For this reason I was able to cross paths with my fourth USk chapter.

San Diego Urban Sketchers held their 10/18 meetup on Coronado Island. The weather was accommodating, the scenery was captivating, and the company was incredibly welcoming. As usual, I was blown away by the artwork exhibited at the show-and-tell session toward the end of the get-together.

My sketch was of the west side of the historic Hotel del Coronado … and includes an attempt to capture a spin class that was being held outdoors that morning.

The employees on the beach were very accommodating as I crouched in the lounge area to sketch the scene (green sweatshirt in background).

I hope to visit this group again and I encourage fellow sketchers to look for local USk chapters wherever their travels take them!

Halloween

Although I no longer dress up in costume for Halloween, I still enjoy going out to see other people run around with their trick-or-treat bags. Mānoa Valley is a popular Halloween destination – candy is handed out generously and people of all ages get into the spirit.

Before entering the fray myself, I couldn’t help but sketch the sunset from an elevated vantage point in upper Mānoa.

Then, I made a beeline down to faculty housing which is a hub of activity in the valley.

Two residents made an enormous effort to transform their housing unit for Halloween. Not only had they made a stunning ship, which they manned as pirates, but they incorporated a history lesson. The ship was flying a USA-pirate flag, and a flickering image of Queen Lili‘uokalani behind bars was projected onto the balcony. A recorded voice from within the bow told trick-or-treaters about the USS Boston’s involvement in the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. All in all, it was an impressive installation complete with a fog machine creating a spooky scene!

These stationary subjects were easier to sketch than the kids racing around!
