Global Sketchwalk Ends at Aloha Tower

As the Urban Sketchers chapter closest to the International Date Line, USk Oʻahu found itself in a privileged position this morning, as we staged the final leg of today’s worldwide sketchwalk in celebration of USk’s 10th anniversary. Although the weather looked less than inviting early in the day, the conditions downtown were actually quite pleasant – overcast and cool, with just the occasional drizzle. Our three-stop sketchwalk offered views of the aging Falls of Clyde (the last remaining iron-hulled four-masted ship), pub life, birds and fish, harbor activities, Aloha Tower, and of course the unavoidable backdrop of open ocean and swaying palm trees. All featured in our sketches. Taking advantage of the many sheltered spots in the area, we marked the occasion with a nice turnout (given the mildly worrisome conditions in the early morning) and lots of inspiring artwork. An Exclusive Gathering

Today’s sketch event took us back to the Hawaiʻi Kai Towne Center. Although the little promenade on its south side offers inviting views across the marina, we were determined to stick to the promise we made at our previous event, which was to honor the “urban” in “urban sketchers” and document ordinary scenes and everyday life, rather than postcard-worthy vistas. We only succeeded partly. Somehow palm trees and sparkling bodies of water have a way of inserting themselves into almost every view around here!

Law Without Order

Not that today’s event at UH’s law school was disorderly. Attendance was not to order though. On the other hand, the sketches presented at show and tell were all of the first order. And everyone stayed longer, in order to enjoy good company some more.

Sketching an Astronaut

This past Wednesday, I attended a talk given by NASA astronaut Michael Fincke. You can read more about him here.

Unfortunately, I did not have my sketchbook on me, so I resorted to drawing in the back of my notebook. His talk featured many stunning photos (and even a video tour of the ISS!), which I was not quick enough to sketch. I did have time to draw the speaker. Looks like three different astronauts! Note his autograph though!

USkO Birthday Event

We returned to our roots today, i.e., Picnic Area #31 on Magic Island, the venue of USk Oʻahu’s very first sketch gathering in September 2014. The mauka views have changed since then, as development of Ala Moana Shopping Center and of the Kakaʻako waterfront area continues. Magic Island seemed the same though, filled as ever with families, joggers, and wedding parties. After our customary sharing of sketches, we recognized a few of our long-term members and celebrated our 3rd birthday by raffling off a few sketching utensils, munching poi mochi and cookies, and chatting about past and future sketch activities. Happy Birthday, USkO!
